OXFORD University’s women’s lightweight quad secured a gold medal in Rotterdam.

Representing Great Britain, the crew of Becky Lane, Sophie Philbrick, Ellie Backhouse and Sarah Robinson were victorious at the European Universities Games.

They went one better than the silver medal they won at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) regatta in May, which earned them qualification.

Oxford finished second in the seeding race to secure lane four in the final.

They had a four-second advantage over the other crews at the 500m mark, and continued to push.

Oxford clocked 6mins 56.42secs to finish 13 seconds ahead of Tilburg University (Netherlands) and 36 clear of University of Heidelburg (Germany).

Their time would also have been good enough for victory in the heavyweight event.

THREE Headington School girls helped Great Britain’s juniors to second place behind Italy in the 12-nation Coupe de la Jeunesse in France.

Isabel Lingard raced twice in a single, notching up silver and bronze medals.

She also took a bronze in the women’s eight, where she was joined by her Headington club colleagues Matilda Martin and cox Sasha Adwani.

Martin was also in the silver medal coxless four before being told to fly to Hamburg on Monday to take a late place in this week’s Junior World Championship coxless four.

Sam Gillingham and Albert Mitchell, from St Edward’s School, Oxford, raced twice in the GB coxless four, gaining a fifth place on Saturday and a bronze medal on Sunday.

Henley’s Town Regatta gave Wallingford’s Dan Wilkinson the chance to shine.

He won the intermediate 2 singles, a one-foot decision going his way in the final, and was second in the elite singles and the intermediate 1 singles.
