OVER the years countless dogs have walked with their owners through Port Meadow.

But it was Jericho artist Rory Carnegie who decided to photograph them for a series set to be shown at an international festival, Photography Oxford.

He will display eight of his pictures at the Sarah Wiseman Gallery in South Parade, from September 14 to October 5.

His Port Meadow Dogs series will be exhibited during the festival of leading photographers in the city next month and October.

The Oxford Mail’s sister paper The Oxford Times is the official media partner of the event – to feature at least 30 leading photographers from around the globe.

The artist was inspired to take them after his lurcher Luca died at eight years old.

He said: “He died tragically from rat poison after having gone for a run and I found that I didn’t have many pictures of him. But we often walked in Port Meadow.

“My series is about when you are used to a place and get a certain affection for it and keep going back, because you are still excited to go there each time.

“I am trying to capture that mood of Port Meadow and how it felt to go there with Luca. So when I’m there I meet other people with dogs and ask them if they’d like to come to my studio to be photographed.”

Mr Carnegie said his images were made from taking pictures of the meadow from different angles and layering them over one another.

The pictures of the dogs were taken in his Park Town studio, off Banbury Road in Oxford.

He added: “I would find it impossible to pick a favourite, but I do like greyhounds particularly because of the wild quality they have.

“They always look as though they are hunting and have a certain elegance.

“I have done about 20 to 25 pictures, but will be exhibiting eight.”

A professional photographer, Mr Carnegie has had his pictures featured in The Observer, the Telegraph Magazine, The Sunday Times, GQ magazine and the British Journal of Photography.
