OXFORD has been ranked one of the most wallet-busting cities for couples to visit this bank holiday weekend.

It has been ranked the second most expensive across the UK by TripAdvisor for the holiday break, at an estimated £310.20 per night

London unsurprisingly topped the list with an eye-watering £348.79 per night, with both cities considerably above the lowest ranked city Sheffield, which came in at a budget £199.13 a night.

TripAdvisor spokeswoman Hayley Coleman said: "For Brits planning a UK break over the upcoming bank holiday weekend, heading north will generally offer the best value for a three-night break.

"However, as our research of booking rates on TripAdvisor shows, visiting some of the more expensive destinations doesn’t have to be off the cards.

"Travellers can still find hotels with availability over the weekend for at least £30 less than the city average hotel price."

TripAdvisor took the 20 most searched for cities over the past year and ranked them for a four-day break taking into account factors such as lunch, dinner, taxis, attractions and hotel.

In Oxford this included a daily average £30.02 on lunch, £12.60 on taxis, £66.28 on dinners, £3.40 on attractions totalling more than £1,042 for three nights in a hotel and fours days exploring the city.

TripAdvisor suggests for the best value for money is at the Remont Oxford Hotel off Banbury Road this bank holiday and the Oxford Bike Tour.
