A FOOTBALL fan's dream of seeing his team play at Wembley crumbled after he launched a packet of custard creams during a ruckus at an earlier game.

Oxford United supporter Lewis Managan, of Kings Close, Letcombe Regis, was banned from any matches after being involved in post-match violence following the club's clash with Millwall on February 2.

During his sentencing today at Oxford Magistrates Court, the 20-year-old season ticket holder was ordered to pay a £170 fine for throwing a "missile" during the fight at the Kassam Stadium.

Oxford Mail:

Liz Tweed, prosecuting, said: "After the match at 9.45pm fans were leaving the ground and there was conflict between Oxford and Millwall fans.

"The defendant was in a group of about 30 to 40 people.

"The police were trying to keep the groups apart with a barrier of vans and police officers."

Ms Tweed said during the abusive chanting Managan launched a cream oblong object into the Millwall fans.

Luke Deal, defending, said Managan had already paid the price by missing the Us' Johnstone Paint Trophy final against Barnsley at Wembley "which was a sore point for him".

He said after the game Managan had felt a packet of custard creams – thrown by the Millwall fans – hit his leg and in retaliation picked up the packet and threw it back.

He added: "He has been on conditional bail since his arrest, with the condition banning him from attending any Oxford matches.

"He has not been involved in the institutional culture of football violence and there is nothing to suggest he would get involved in something like this again."

Magistrate Jan Greenhof said: "This is unfortunate, particularly since it was a packet of custard creams, which means Millwall are getting a bit soft in their old age.

"However, it is an offence to throw a missile even in retaliation."

Managan admitted throwing a missile at the spectators' area. He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £25.

He was not given a football banning order.
