A 62-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for 18 years for a brutal campaign of rape that started when his victim was 10 or 11.

Tony Humphreys, of Arthur Evans Close, Wootton, near Abingdon, was convicted of 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of rape.

The father of two was found guilty on Monday of all the charges against him at Oxford Crown Court following a week-long trial.

Humphreys was convicted of raping his victim many times over a number of years, and was described by Judge Peter Ross as ruining her life.

All the offences took place during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

Passing sentence Judge Ross told the defendant his crimes had a profound effect on his victim and added that some of the evidence was heartbreaking to listen to.

Judge Ross said: “The effect on her was truly terrible. You are a brute, and your behaviour towards her was brutal.”

As he was being taken down to begin his sentence, Humphreys said: “I’m not guilty your honour, I have done nothing and you are sending a guilty man (sic) down.”

Judge Ross replied: “I know I’m sending a guilty man down.”

He paid tribute to the victim for coming forward and for her conduct during the trial, telling her: “You have my respect.”

After the hearing DS Sarah Berry said: “I’m extremely happy with the verdict. I always believed the victim and I’m glad the jury did as well.”
