THE family of missing Oxford woman Emily Stiff have been told about the discovery of a woman's body in the Thames this afternoon.

Police are at the river behind Weirs Lane after a passerby reported seeing what was believed to be a person in the river.

Officers went to the scene at 2.45pm and found the body.

Spokeswoman Connie Primmer said: “Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased woman.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but is not currently believed to be suspicious.”

Police spokeswoman Michelle Campbell added: "We have spoken to the family of Emily to let them know about the discovery of this body but it is too early for identification."

Fire services confirmed that they had been called to help with the recovery of a body.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called at 2.45pm but our services were not needed so we came away again by 2.50pm.

“It’s been handed to the police.” 

Miss Stiff, 22, has been missing since February 24.

The Riverside Road resident was known to like to walk down the river and twice in the past fortnight police have searched the Thames.
