Oxford's former Masonic lodge could be turned into a school building.

Independent school d’Overbroecks has announced plans to turn 333 Banbury Road into a sixth-form teaching site.

The development will be accompanied by plans to turn 376 Banbury Road into a sixth-form boarding house.

A public exhibition of the school’s plans will be held on Friday at 333 Banbury Road between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Principal Sami Cohen will be present to explain the proposals.

Developer Homespace had hoped to transform 333 Banbury Road into 17 family homes but this plan was thrown out by Oxford City Council.

The site was then was put on the market and bought by Carnegie Capital Estates, which is now working with d’Overbroecks — based in Banbury Road — on the new proposals.

Until September 2012 the site was home to the Oxford Centre, which was used as a Masonic lodge and conference centre.

It was put on the market by the Oxfordshire Masonic Hall Company last year, with eight members of staff made redundant. Its closure was put down to lack of conference trade, which made it increasingly difficult to cover maintenance and operating costs.

The centre sits in 1.3 acres of grounds. The original “villa” dates back to 1823. It was acquired by the Masons more than 50 years ago.
