Artist brings her delightful landscapes to exhibit in city

AN artist was inspired by the Oxfordshire countryside in painting her latest work.

Great Milton resident Caroline Meynell painted landscapes around her village, Otmoor and the Wittenham Clumps for her work, called Light, Land and Place.

Her solo exhibition is currently on display at the 03 Gallery in Oxford Castle Quarter.

The married grandmother-of-one said: “My paintings are landscapes at places which are very important to me. Oxfordshire is a beautiful county.

“They are places that I know very well and loved, and I wished to convey something about them in the paintings.

“I do a lot of walking in these areas so it’s the familiarity that I look for. I love space and land - they are very strong features in my work and are very calming.”

Mrs Meynell, a former picture researcher for a publisher, has been an artist since graduating in fine art from Bucks Chiltern University College in 2003 and has also exhibited at Dorchester Abbey and Oxford University’s Wolfson College.

She won the Oxfordshire Artweeks Mary Moser award - an annual prize intended to help develop the career of a professional artist who has taken up art as a second career later in life - in 2012.

Mrs Meynell has 30 paintings, which also feature other areas of the country like the Scottish borders, exhibited and said there has been a positive reaction from the public.

She said: “I’ve been working very hard towards this exhibition and I’ve sold a lot of artwork.

“There’s been a lot of comments from people saying they are beautiful paintings and there are people who collect my work.

“It’s been a pleasure exhibiting at the gallery and the work looks really wonderful there.”

The exhibition started on Saturday, July 26 and ends on Sunday.
