With five games still remaining, only five points separate the top seven teams in Section One.

The one-time runaway leaders, the Black’s Head (Bletchingdon), have lost three of their last four contests, yet still head up affairs but only by courtesy of their heavier scoring.

They have been joined on 12 points, ominously, by the Green Road Club (Kidlington). The latter have notched up three consecutive victories, the latest a convincing 80-69 beating of their old rivals, the Seacourt Bridge (Botley). The win would have been more emphatic had they spotted it was a ‘sleuth’ rather than a ‘sloth’ of bears although, as would-be collective nouns go, ‘sloth’ does have a certain ring about it.

Also hovering with intent in the second tier of Quizland, is the Royal Sun (Begbroke). Champions in the West during the Winter campaign, they bounced back from that agonisingly narrow defeat to Premiership outfit, the Ploughman’s Bunch! (Wolvercote), seven days earlier, to hand out a bit of a walloping, at home, to the ‘Young Un’s’ aka the Royal Blenheim ‘B’ (Oxford City). The visitors actually got off to a cracking start, as they so often do, and were ahead after two rounds, but then things went badly awry very quickly, not least with their bête noire, the pictures, and despite outscoring their opponents in the final round, they were overwhelmed 82-59.

The Gardener’s Arms (North Parade) are now fourth. Their last three matches have all gone down to the final pair of questions, and their correct identification of the Turks and Caicos Islands as a British overseas tax haven allowed them to pip the North Oxford Conservative Club (Summertown), at the death, 74-73.

It was yet another long night for Captain Conway and his merry men representing the Black Swan (East Oxford). Reports have it that the lads were last seen sloping off to bed long after the sun had risen, some celebration, I guess, of yet another success, their third in a row, this latest at the expense of the White Hart (Eynsham), 74-59.

In the Premier Division, and quite possibly game of the night, the Royal Blenheim ‘A’ maintained their interest in the silverware after overcoming the Ploughman’s Bunch! 83-78. They currently lie just two points behind front runners, the Plough, with them due to face each other in round 13 (of 14).

The Plough stays first after seeing off the Black’s Head 87-66. Next up for them is the rejuvenated Green Road Club – a match that has the makings of a cracker.

There is a break, however, in league action this Thursday with the sides battling it out instead in the ‘21st Century’ themed Tabletop.

If you are interested in participating in the leagues, either as an individual or a team, the winter season begins in mid-October.
