A CITY centre car park is to be shut off from today for works in preparation of the £400m redevelopment of the Westgate site.

Oxford City Council is creating a bigger space at the Oxpens car park to replace the Westgate multi-storey while the development takes place. Work on the retail development – which could include 70 new shops, a basement car park with 1,000 spaces, and rooftop terrace – could start next year.

Long term coach and lorry parking is also today being moved from Oxpens to the Redbridge park-and-ride site in south Oxford.

Work to accommodate the coaches and lorries started last Monday.

The council hopes the new Oxpens car park will be completed by the end of the year and has said customers should use Abbey Place or Westgate car park while it is closed.
