ENGLAND fans across Oxfordshire will be hoping Keith Dovier is a good omen. Starting work at Witney Co-op in 1966, he witnessed what so many of us want to see again . . . the Three Lions lifting the World Cup.

Retiring on June 30 after 48 years working at the Co-op, will he get the best retirement present – a repeat of the feat?

Even if England do not do him proud, the Liverpool fan should be applauded for his efforts. He is the equivalent of Steven Gerrard, a one-club player in a time when everyone is looking for a better move.

From cleaner to freezer stocker, no job has been too small for him and he has outlived three different chains owning the store.

So when Rooney et al kick off, let us raise a drink to Mr Dovier and wish him a well-deserved retirement.
