RESIDENTS have united in a campaign fighting plans to build 270 homes on the “best view in Witney”.

It comes as developer Gladman Homes submitted a planning application – yet to be made public – to West Oxfordshire District Council with its proposals to develop a site overlooking the Windrush Valley.

Campaigners have set up the Windrush Valley Protection Group and are issuing A4 posters saying “Stop housing development on Burford Road” to 1,000 homes in the area to be placed in windows.

An online petition has been signed by more than 170 people and a website has also been created including campaign details.

Gladman Homes sent leaflets to residents as part of a public consultation showing it wants to build the estate on a field behind the Windrush Inn off Burford Road.

Campaign co-chairwoman Jennie Allen, an environmental consultant who lives in Burford Road, said: “The initial leaflet set alarm bells ringing.

“We thought we can’t just sit back and let them do this so we got a campaign team together to get Witney people involved.”

Residents say there would be an increased risk of flooding downstream in the town centre, more traffic in Burford Road near Tower Hill School and would effect air quality in Bridge Street.

District council spokeswoman Carys Davies said: “The developer has submitted a planning application but it will have to be checked and validated by the council before it is registered.

“We’re unable to give a timeframe for when it will be made public.”
