Councillors to look at gym application

Oxford Mail: Oxford City Council Oxford City Council

A school has now submitted a planning application to extend its gym for community use.

The £200,000 facility at Oxford Spires Academy will upgrade the existing site and the school hopes to offer the use of its gym to residents.

Oxford City Council is funding the work.

The city council is hoping to close down nearby Temple Cowley Pools, although a community group has been given a six-month time frame to raise money to buy it for community use.

An application will now be considered by councillors at a date yet to be set.

I thought the County Council was responsible for schools?

The funding is quite complex with the academy status.

The Oxford Academy gym and leisure facilities, a short walk away, are open to the community too.

Not sure why we should be paying part of our council tax to the county for education and the city also does not make sense to me. Just like last year when the city budgeted £1million for education. Not surprising our council tax is so high in the city.

It's designed to mitigate against the closure of the gym element of TCP. They are practically within line of sight of each other.
