Oxford Mail: Quality commission criticises another healthcare unit Quality commission criticises another healthcare unit

ANOTHER healthcare facility run by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust has been criticised in a report released today.

A report from the Care Quality Commission said some of the rooms at a facility for people with learning disabilities were “not fit for purpose”.

Evenlode, in Sandford Road, Littlemore, Oxford, is a medium secure inpatient unit that works with people with learning disabilities who have offended or are at risk of offending, and those with severe challenging behaviour.

The CQC also found that some of the bathrooms at Evenlode could not be used by patients because part of the room “exposed people to potential risk”. Details of what that risk was were not available last night.

Adrian Hughes, a deputy chief inspector for adult social care in the South region, said: “We found that staff interacted positively on many occasions and care was generally good, but our inspectors did have serious concerns with certain areas within this service.

“We have now issued a formal warning to the trust requiring urgent action. The trust has informed us that improvements have taken place.”

Southern Health has also been criticised for the facilities at its Piggy Lane care home in Bicester and at Slade House in Headington, where Connor Sparrowhawk died.

Lesley Munro, divisional director for learning disability at Southern Health, said: “We take the CQC findings very seriously and the necessary building works to ensure the unit is fully compliant are due to be completed imminently.”
