A SECONDARY school told it had “serious weaknesses” has been judged to have improved by Ofsted inspectors.

Fitzharry’s in Northcourt Road, Abingdon was rated inadequate in November 2012 but was told on Tuesday that it has gone up a level.

The school was judged to “require improvement” – the next step up from inadequate.

Headteacher Jonathan Dennett said the school is heading in the “right direction”.

It was told by Ofsted inspectors in February that students’ achievement was too variable and achievement at the end of year 11 was not secure.

But they praised the school’s high expectations and said there was a clear focus on the progress of all students.

Mr Dennett said “We are pleased Ofsted recognise Fitzharrys is clearly moving forward.

“We are determined to make further progress, and the report shows we are heading in the right direction.”

The school’s sixth form students were praised for being good role models to younger students.

Mr Dennett said: “We are pleased that Ofsted recognises the good work the school does to nurture our students’ moral, social and cultural lives.”

Chairwoman of governors Lynn Fathers said: “February’s inspection has provided a welcome opportunity to demonstrate that Fitzharrys is both an improved and improving school.

“With high expectations of our students and staff we know that Fitzharrys has great potential.

“Mr Dennett and staff have worked hard and with a clear focus to ensure that students benefit from better teaching. Governors were delighted to congratulate the team.”
