March protests state of London Road, Oxford

Oxford Mail: Protesters in London Road Protesters in London Road

PROTESTERS took to the streets of Headington on Saturday to voice their anger over the state of London Road.

About 50 people marched down the pothole-strewn road with placards from Green Road roundabout to Bury Knowle Park for an hour from 11am.

Conservative-led Oxfordshire County Council agreed on Monday to a £1.3m summer resurfacing from the roundabout to Wharton Road.

But Liberal Democrat county councillor for Headington and Quarry Roz Smith is leading calls for a complete rebuild.

She said: “We had a lot of support during the hour that we were out.

“Lots of people were talking to us, and joining as we went.”

The work is due to start in May for three to four months and will include extensions to the bus and cycle lanes.

Yet Conservative cabinet member for highways David Nimmo Smith said: “The officers have recommended that this is the appropriate action. The council officers are the professionals when it comes to this and this is what they have signed off."

What David Nimmo Smith means to say is that his favoured private contractor has convinced said officers that resurfacing the road now and doing so again in four years from now will give the company more of a steady stream of income. If you want to see inefficient government in this country don't look for those 'benefit cheats' like the poor man whose death was reported a few days ago (benefit cheats are a big problem in places where you really do have a generous welfare state, like Denmark or the Netherlands, not in the UK), look at the massive transfer of tax payer money to outsourcing companies. They come in promising to do it on the cheap, then do a rotten job so they have to come in again to rework their own mistakes.

I'm glad it was dry for them.

If anyone from the city council is reading this... Would you kindly arrange to sweep the loose chippings from the pavement?

Who'd have thought it would come to this? People protesting about the state of the roads?

Oxfordshire roads are really, really bad. I drive a lot, and you can literally tell the difference as you cross the county border, from Northants especially. The only place to my knowledge with roads in a generally worse condition than Oxon is Sheffield/South Yorks, where they are literally falling apart.

Come on OCC - we pay you a huge amount of tax, we also pay to use roads in so many ways, the least we can do is expect well maintained roads.

Wonder how long it will take Labour to claim the London Road protest march was their idea - or was Labour's candidate sent back to the 'Bury Knowle Bunker' for another exclusive insight into how Labour did a massive 'U-Bend' on its previous decision to close public toilets around the City? When will Labour learn that voters want action about things which they feel strongly about, not meaningless socialist rhetoric and empty promises from their candidates and incumbents trying to get elected for yet another four years of undemocratic City Council domination by a local Labour Party which apparently still thinks Gordon Brown was a great Chancellor and PM (unlike most of the rest of the thinking world) and many of whose City and Country Councillors call each other 'comrade' in common with the way the people of the Ukraine are currently being wooed by good old Russia - the very bedrock of socialism and democracy.
