WHO’S a pretty boy then?

Exotic bird fanciers flocked to a church at the weekend for the Oxford 1910 Cage Bird Society’s annual show.

Anthony Brain was cock-a-hoop after winning his first medals for his cinnamon sky blue budgerigar.

Altogether there were 492 budgies, canaries and finches flaunting their feathers at the United Reformed Church in Collinwood Road, Risinghurst.

Mr Brain, 53, who lives in Headington and works for Reading Borough Council said: “It was my first Best in Show award, I was really, really pleased.”

Show secretary June Cox, 69, from Radley, said: “It went very well.

“The highlight for us was that Anthony Brain, who is a beginner, took the prize for best budgerigar in show. He was delighted with that.”

The Oxford 1910 society has about 80 members.

For its first show, held 103 years ago at the Carfax Assembly Rooms in Cornmarket Street, exhibitors brought their birds on bike, motorbikes, on horseback and driving some of the first cars.

Mrs Cox’s husband Norman, today’s society secretary, said he enjoyed the hobby as it was relaxing – until showtime.
